Beetle Forever

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 7:00 am

The Beatle mania came to an end during the early 80s if I’m not mistaken. Sir Paul, John, Ringo and George. Still remember this Fab 4? I guess most of you are familiar, and some people don’t.

Anyway, the real Beetle that I’m talking about is the cute vehicle from the 30s. Don’t tell me you’re not familiar with this? You’ve seen this vehicle for sure, not only in the time of the 30s but until today. I bet that once or twice, you’ve already spotted the Beetle somewhere down your locality’s busy streets, right?

Volkswagen Beetle

You must be wondering why this car continuous to exist in the present time. Well, if you ask me, I’ll give you three words - best car ever!

This model was produced by Volkswagen and which is obviously from Germany. The Beetle, or originally called as the Volkswagen Type 1, was made as an economy car during the late 30s. The name Beetle or “bug” was the given nickname of the Volkswagen Type 1 and it was easily adapted by the people, but the Volkswagen company themselves eventually used the name Beetle for their marketing purposes during the year 1967 in August.

Although the Beetle is known for its odd (maybe we can call it unique) auto body parts, high and loud noise levels, jagged ride and short-powered flair, the Beetle was recognized as the longest and highest most produced ultimate single designed automobile. Production started from the 30s to year 2003. Imagine? That’s like a big ‘Wow!’ for me.

In fact, the Beetle is no doubt the most recognizable and most known vehicle to the public compared to all other automobiles. This car will always be remembered as a living legend, as we all watch it on the busy streets with a proud “bug” look! That’s certainly the Beetle immortality!

Remembering The Oldsmobile

Oldsmobile Toronado

The Oldsmobile is a vehicle brand that used to belong to the General Motors umbrella. However, because of some reasons, the car company decided that it was better off with the Oldsmobile and so they then let the Oldsmobile go and have a grand time in junkyard heaven.

But during its lifespan, this auto brand has been known for its really classy cars and the kind of sophistication that its technical features held. And it also did become the basis for a lot of firsts in the auto industry. A milestone maker - that’s what the Oldsmobile is.

Here are some:

  • An Oldsmobile vehicle used the very first speedometer.
  • The US Post Office used Oldsmobile vehicles as their first motor vehicles.
  • The first use of chrome plating in automotive was when Oldsmobile used this to plate the radiator and the surrounding parts.
  • The very first monoblock V8 was used on an Oldsmobile.
  • The automatic choke was first used on a vehicle by Oldsmobile.
  • Oldsmobile is the first US car company to have vehicles with side airbag for the driver’s side and it came in the form of the Toronado.
  • Anyhow, here is a list of all the Oldsmobile vehicles that has graced our roads and streets. I do think though that if this one was still around, perhaps just by putting Monroe shocks would further improve its already breathtaking performance.

    Taiwan’s Push Car Railways

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 5:36 am

    railways

Did you know that the first push car railway was Taiwan’s first transportation system? Yes, you heard (well, read) me right. The push car railways were a historic transportation system of Taiwan.

It started to be used in Taiwan after the country was considered an independent country. When they were ceded from Japan, the car system was brought to Taiwan and went into service since 1895 to the late 1940s. It initiated the development of the steam locomotion system in Taiwan.

The car doesn’t have powertrain parts nor fuel parts as it is manually propel using human strength. It is also operated in narrow gauge railways that measure up to 18 to 20 inches.

The foundation of the car is made up of a platform where railway wheels are attached. There are raised poles attached to the platform where the operator uses it to propel the vehicle. The vehicle can accommodate 4 passengers but mostly, these vehicles only accept two people especially on passenger cars. The car is only capable of carrying 450 pounds max.

Push cars railways were first seen on Tainan to Kaohsiung and this line was completed in December of 1895. The car was at peak between 1920s to mid-1930s. It ran on areas like western, coastal Taiwan, running from Taipei to Kaohsiung. The car is made to travel across waterways and ran across inclined terrain. But the push car suddenly disappears after modern cars were discovered.

Now, you can only see these historical push cars in museums in Taiwan. And it is also quite interesting to take a look at them.
